The history of the Internet starts with the old Arpanet. The Arpanet was a networking system of computers, between the government, universities, and research labs. It was built and designed to facilitate open and free exchange of information, ideas, and collaboration on projects. Many on the Internet still believe the soul of the Internet is those few words: Open and Free Exchange of Information. I believe in this premise, and FreSch! in a very small way is representative of it. What started out as a way to learn HTML and Perl and hopefully help a few people along the way, ended up growing to a collaboration of many. Without their input, ideas, and help, FreSch! would not be here. I have spent thousands of hours on FreSch! over the last nearly three years, and it would have been impossible if it wasn't for the help freely offered by virtual strangers who are now very real friends. My thanks go out to all of them.
Robert Kiger, one of my roommates, for teaching me about HTML tables, for his endless critiques of site navigation, for helping input scholarships, for not making too many typos on the ones he input, for helping with research into new links, for being there when I had no place else to go, for reminding me I need to sleep occasionally, for Believing, and for loving my dogs despite being a cat person!
Jenny Lineback and Caitlyn McFarland, my best friends, for testing the site time and time again for accessibility issues for text-to-speech users, for sending me links to great information on making web sites accessible, for being a wonderful "devil's advocate" and helping me keep my ideas down to earth, for emailing me jokes, for feeding me dinner and letting me crash on the sofa when I was too tired to drive home!
Debbie, who I've never met, who has personally submitted well over 400 new scholarships to FreSch!, who has an incredible eagle-eye for typos, for endless input from a user's point of view on how to make the site better, for Believing, and for many kind words. Debbie was one of the first to find FreSch!, and has been of invaluable help in making FreSch! user-friendly and bug-reduced! You are the best, Debbie! I hope you find your daughter $500,000 in scholarships!
Caryl, another new-found friend on the 'net, for sending me countless scholarships for students studying abroad, for giving me excellent advice on finding grants and scholarships, for sharing her five years' of experience with scholarship searching and winning, for the "Tips" she has submitted which will help other students, for Believing, and for always answering my email!
EVERYONE on the PHP discussion list, for answering my newbie questions, even when they didn't make sense!
Ignacio, who I also have never met, for providing me with the code modifications I needed to make to my original Perl-based search script to allow "multi-selects" on various categories. Not only does Ignacio's modifications allow multi-selects in the Search, it allowed me to modify my own database structure to make it more efficient and faster.
John Pritchett, who took the graphics I created for FreSch! and made them better. No more jaggies! And for long-winded email debates on the meaning of life!
Selena Sol and Gunther Birznieks, of Selena Sol's Public Domain Script Archive and the incredible information available on their pages. I cannot thank them enough for the invaluable help I found on their pages. While I no longer use the search scripts originally created by him on FreSch! the knowledge I gained from their pages is still in use.
Thanks also to Planet Internet, my original host, and to Alabanza, my current host, for their reliable service, their patience, and outstanding technical support.
To the makers of the games Civilization II and Star Control III, two of the best time-wasters ever created. Hey, I can't always be knuckle-deep in scholarship research and script debugging!
The Rest of my Roommates, Maria, Cinda, Kenneth, Kevin, Michael... For not thinking I'm crazy when I start talking to my computer after being on it for 14 hours, for waking me up when I need to get to work (I'm NOT easy to wake up!) for always making sure my dogs had food and water even when I forgot the world existed, and for being there.
To my dogs, the "wondermutts" Cleveland and Colfax, for being terrific feet warmers under the desk, for being the best bed-warmers in the world, for licking my face when "mom" got irritated and frustrated over fixing a bug, for getting hair in the keyboard, drool on my chair, bones under the blankets, for letting me play ball and feed them and for letting me share their lives. Hey, if you don't have pets, get one! They are sanity savers!
Saving the best for last... EVERYONE who has used FreSch!, everyone who has sent me their problems, came back and checked to see if I fixed it right when I asked them to, submitted scholarships, told me of wrong addresses or other information, and sent me many kind and supportive words.
I thank you all!
